Choose PostHog for the first trial when a small, engineering-led B2B SaaS team wants product analytics in the same product family as session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys, and adjacent developer tooling. Its public pricing separates usage by product, retains monthly free allowances on pay-as-you-go, and exposes per-product billing limits.
Choose Mixpanel for the first trial when the core job is self-serve behavioral analysis across product, data, and marketing users. Mixpanel’s official positioning is more tightly centered on funnels, retention, cohorts, and real-time product analytics. It also documents broad SDK, warehouse-ingestion, and raw-export options.
This is a research-based fit assessment, not a hands-on finding. StackRubric did not create live projects, test identity behavior, compare query speed, or operate either service in production.
Who each tool is for
PostHog
PostHog is the broader product and developer-tool platform in this comparison. Its product analytics documentation covers trends, funnels, retention, paths, stickiness, and lifecycle analysis. The same events, people, and properties connect analytics to replay, feature flags, and experiments. Its pricing page also lists surveys, error tracking, data warehouse, data pipelines, logs, workflows, and AI-related products.
That breadth is attractive to a small team that wants fewer vendors and a shared event model. It also means the bill has several independent surfaces. Product analytics, replay, feature flags, surveys, warehouse rows, and other products can each become a cost driver.
Mixpanel
Mixpanel is more explicitly an analytics product. Its product analytics page emphasizes self-serve user-behavior analysis, funnels, retention, and cohorts. Session replay and web analytics are present in self-serve plans, while feature flags and experimentation appear in the Enterprise offer reviewed for this article.
That positioning suits teams that want analysts, product managers, marketers, and engineers to work from a behavioral analytics layer without making an expanded developer-tool suite the primary buying criterion.
Methodology
We reviewed official documentation, pricing, security, legal, and vendor-owned source repositories on August 14, 2026. We compared six decision areas:
- intended users and product scope;
- current pricing model and usage limits;
- setup paths, SDKs, and ingestion options;
- retention and privacy controls;
- security, compliance, and regional claims;
- exports, migration paths, and lock-in.
We did not rely on review marketplaces or unsourced affiliate roundups. We did not operate either service. Dynamic prices that could not be reproduced from the public static page are treated as unknown. Security and compliance statements are vendor claims unless an underlying artifact was independently reviewed, which we did not do here.
Feature and workflow comparison
Analytics and adjacent products
Both products cover the familiar product-analytics workflow: capture events and properties, segment behavior, build funnels, and inspect retention. The difference is the surrounding surface.
PostHog connects analytics to replay, flags, experiments, surveys, and a growing set of developer and data tools using a shared model. For a small technical team, that can make one implementation useful across several product questions. It can also create coupling between analytics, release controls, and other workflows if the team later changes vendors.
Mixpanel presents product analytics as the center of the product. Its official material emphasizes real-time behavioral questions and collaboration across functions. That is a better conceptual fit when the buyer wants depth and accessibility in analytics more than one vendor for a wide tool stack.
Neither source set establishes which interface is easier, which funnel engine is faster, or which identity model causes fewer surprises. Those are trial questions.

Setup and ingestion
PostHog documents an installation wizard, 17 libraries, and 22 framework guides. It supports custom events and autocaptured pageviews, clicks, and form submissions. The vendor recommends a reverse proxy to reduce interception by tracking blockers and allows website, app, and mobile data to be grouped in one project.
Mixpanel documents client SDKs for JavaScript, React Native, Android, iOS, Flutter, and Unity, plus server SDKs for Python, Node.js, Ruby, PHP, Go, and Java. HTTP APIs provide a fallback. It also explicitly supports ingesting existing events through BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Segment, and server APIs rather than requiring a new client SDK for every path.
Both products therefore support client- and server-side collection. PostHog’s setup story highlights guided installation and a proxy option; Mixpanel’s highlights SDK, API, CDP, and warehouse-led ingestion. Actual time to a trustworthy dashboard depends on the tracking plan, identity rules, consent model, and quality checks—not just copying an SDK snippet.
Retention, limits, and privacy controls
PostHog Free advertises one-year retention. Pay-as-you-go advertises seven years and preserves monthly free allowances across metered products. It also documents controls to drop events, hash personally identifiable information, anonymize IP data, and discard client IP addresses before storage.
Mixpanel’s Free page advertises unlimited data history, while its security overview says customers have data-retention options. The current pricing page limits monthly event and replay ingestion by plan even where history is advertised as unlimited. We did not reconcile the marketing phrase against every region, contract, or project setting.
Retention is only one data-governance question. Teams should also verify deletion latency, backup expiry, late-event handling, regional routing, and whether a configured privacy transformation occurs before storage. Those behaviors were not tested here.
Security, compliance, and regions
PostHog’s public Trust Center says its products are covered by a third-party-audited SOC 2 Type II report and lists SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA in its compliance area. PostHog offers US and EU cloud regions and recommends the EU service for robust GDPR requirements.
Mixpanel states that it uses TLS in transit, encryption at rest, logical separation, authentication and authorization controls, and maintains SOC 2 Type II attestation plus ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certifications. It documents US and EU data residency and customer APIs for access and deletion requests.
These are published vendor claims, not our audit. We did not review gated reports, penetration-test results, BAAs, DPAs, subprocessors, incident history, or plan-specific access controls. “HIPAA” should never be read as a blanket certification or availability guarantee for every plan.
Export and switching cost
PostHog batch exports can send data to Azure Blob Storage, BigQuery, Databricks, S3-compatible storage, Snowflake, Postgres, and Redshift, with historical backfills. PostHog warns that destination schemas vary and duplicates may need handling. Its terms say customers retain ownership of Customer Content.
PostHog also has an open-source path, but the qualification matters. Much of the repository is MIT-licensed while an enterprise directory uses separate terms. The official self-host disclaimer positions the open-source deployment as a hobbyist path with limited support and missing cloud features. It is not evidence of effortless cloud parity.
Mixpanel documents CSV export, raw event and profile APIs, JSONL raw-event export for higher volumes, Cohort Syncs, and Data Pipelines. Its terms preserve customer rights in Customer Content and advise customers to maintain their own backups.
Raw-event export reduces data lock-in but does not remove workflow lock-in. Funnels, cohorts, dashboards, annotations, experiments, identity rules, and replay metadata may have vendor-specific semantics. Neither vendor’s public material proves that every saved object can be moved losslessly.
Pricing as of August 14, 2026
PostHog Free requires no card and advertises one project, unlimited team members, one-year retention, 1 million analytics events per month, 5,000 replay recordings, and 1 million feature-flag requests. Pay-as-you-go retains monthly free tiers, adds per-product usage billing and billing limits, and advertises six projects and seven-year retention. Product Analytics is advertised from $0.00005 per event after the free allowance, with decreasing volume tiers.
Mixpanel Free requires no card and advertises up to 1 million events and 10,000 session replays per month. Growth starts at $0 because the first 1 million events are free, supports up to 20 million monthly events, and lists higher replay limits. Enterprise is sales-assisted and advertises much larger scale plus additional product capabilities.
We do not claim that either product is always cheaper. Mixpanel’s current server-rendered page did not expose a stable marginal event rate at each Growth volume, so quoting a single unit price would create false precision. A useful model needs monthly event volume, replay capture, product-specific PostHog usage, data-pipeline activity, retention, governance requirements, discounts, and taxes.
Decision guide for a small team
Trial PostHog first if the team is engineering-led, wants analytics and release or research workflows under one vendor, values visible product-by-product pricing, and is comfortable governing several separate usage meters. It is also the more plausible candidate if access to source code or a limited self-host path matters, provided the team accepts that the official disclaimer does not promise cloud parity or commercial support.
Trial Mixpanel first if high-quality self-serve behavioral analysis is the principal requirement, non-engineering product or marketing users are central, or the team expects to ingest from an existing warehouse or CDP. Confirm which desired functions are available in the selected self-serve plan rather than assuming the Enterprise feature set is included.
Before buying, implement the same small tracking plan in both tools. Use a few high-value events, one identity transition, a funnel, a retention report, a cohort, and a data export. Compare data correctness, time to answer, query latency, collaboration, export completeness, and the projected bill at observed volume.
Limitations
- Neither product was installed, configured, or operated for this article.
- We did not test event delivery, deduplication, late arrival, identity merging, or warehouse parity.
- Dashboard ergonomics, query latency, AI assistance, replay fidelity, and collaboration quality remain unknown.
- A real monthly bill was not calculated, and Mixpanel’s dynamic marginal Growth prices were not reproducible from the static page.
- Public security claims were reviewed, but gated audit artifacts and contractual schedules were not.
- Export exists for both products, but complete portability of reports, cohorts, experiments, flags, replays, and governance configuration is unconfirmed.
