Quick verdict
For a small web or B2B SaaS team with more than one engineer, Sentry is the stronger default to trial first. Its current plan matrix provides a relatively legible multi-user entry point, combines error monitoring with several other telemetry types, and includes API and third-party integrations on the Team plan. Sentry also documents US and German SaaS regions and maintains an official self-hosted distribution.
BugSnag deserves the first trial when mobile or release stability is the central workflow. Its product material gives particular prominence to stability scores, release adoption, error prioritization, feature-flag context, and coverage across more than 50 platforms. The unresolved issue is paid pricing: the public page we reviewed did not expose a stable, reproducible dollar total for a selected event and span allowance.
This is not a hands-on review. StackRubric did not install either product, run a benchmark, or evaluate a trial for this article. The verdict is an editorial inference from the official sources listed below.
Who each tool is for
Sentry
Sentry is the more natural shortlist candidate for a small team that wants one service to cover several developer-observability jobs. Its pricing matrix includes error monitoring, tracing, logs, application metrics, session replay, uptime and cron monitoring, profiling, user feedback, and release health.
That breadth can reduce the need to assemble multiple tools. It also creates an operating responsibility: errors, spans, logs, metrics, and replays have different allowances. A team needs to decide what to collect and sample rather than assume the headline plan price covers unlimited telemetry.
BugSnag
BugSnag is aimed more explicitly at application stability. Its official materials emphasize automatically captured errors, grouping by root cause, diagnostic context, releases, stability scores, feature flags, and performance monitoring. The platform directory documents more than 50 platforms, including Android, iOS, JavaScript, Java, Go, Flutter, React Native, Ruby, Unity, and Unreal Engine.
That makes BugSnag especially relevant when a SaaS product also ships mobile, native, or game clients. Platform breadth does not prove SDK quality, low overhead, or dashboard usability; those remain trial questions.
Methodology
We reviewed official product, documentation, pricing, security, API, and vendor trust pages on August 14, 2026. We compared:
- the free and first multi-user plans;
- the telemetry and stability workflows presented in each plan matrix;
- retention and over-quota behavior;
- setup paths and integrations;
- documented hosting regions, security controls, and compliance evidence;
- export, self-hosting, and migration considerations.
We did not use affiliate-network descriptions, unsourced roundup articles, or vendor-review marketplaces as evidence. Prices are snapshots, not promises. Whenever the public material did not establish a number or scope, we left it unknown rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
Feature and workflow comparison
Product scope
Sentry presents the broader bundle. Its Developer plan is limited to one user, while Team and Business support unlimited users. Team adds API and third-party integrations; Business adds controls such as SAML and SCIM. The breadth is useful for a small web team that would otherwise buy separate error, trace, log, replay, and uptime products.
BugSnag’s plan structure is centered on error and performance monitoring, with error diagnostics, release stability, stability targets, feature-flag context, and distributed tracing represented in the matrix. Select is positioned for smaller teams; Preferred adds deeper prioritization, benchmarks, segmentation, notifications, and SAML SSO.
The practical distinction is not that one product can observe errors and the other cannot. Both can. It is that Sentry’s current offer reads like a broader developer-observability suite, while BugSnag’s reads like a more specialized application-stability workflow.

Setup and integrations
Sentry uses platform SDKs initialized with a project DSN, followed by framework-specific configuration and, where relevant, source-map or symbol uploads. Its API documentation covers resource management and data export. Team is the first plan that explicitly lists APIs and third-party integrations.
BugSnag’s official quickstart estimates that a project can send its first event in under 15 minutes. That is a vendor estimate, not a StackRubric measurement. BugSnag groups integrations into notifications, issue tracking, incident management, data forwarding, and feature management.
For either product, installing the SDK is only the beginning. A production setup normally needs release identifiers, source maps or native symbols, environment separation, sensitive-data filtering, alert thresholds, and ownership routing. We infer this work from the vendors’ configuration and integration capabilities; we did not measure it.
Retention and quota behavior
Sentry advertises a 30-day lookback on Developer and up to 90 days on Team. Its security documentation says individual events are deleted after the applicable retention period, issues are deleted after their events are gone, and backups are deleted 90 days after creation.
BugSnag lists seven-day retention for Free and 60-day retention for standard paid tiers, with custom retention for Enterprise. Its event definition includes both unhandled exceptions and handled exceptions that a customer chooses to report, so a budget model should not count crashes alone.
In both cases, verify what happens after a quota is exhausted. Sentry documents optional pay-as-you-go budgets across separate usage categories. BugSnag says excess errors may be rate-limited or the account can be upgraded depending on configuration. The exact selected plan and contract matter more than a generic comparison.
Security, compliance, and data location
Sentry says it encrypts data in transit and at rest, performs annual independent penetration testing, and makes SOC 2 and ISO 27001 material available through a customer account or on request. Its API documentation identifies US and German region domains. Business and Enterprise carry additional access-management features.
BugSnag says its hosted service uses US-based Google Cloud data centers, encrypts customer data and backups at rest, supports two-factor authentication and organization or project roles, and undergoes third-party penetration testing.
The public BugSnag security page displays compliance badges, but the visible SmartBear trust material we reviewed did not clearly establish BugSnag-specific scope for every report. A regulated buyer should request current certificates, report scope, subprocessors, data-processing terms, and any required BAA from either vendor. Logos are not a contract.
Export and switching cost
Sentry’s official API supports data export, and the project maintains an official self-hosted distribution positioned for low-volume deployments and proofs of concept. Self-hosting is an escape hatch, not a free migration: the distribution comprises multiple services and requires ongoing maintenance.
BugSnag’s Data Access API exposes organization, project, error, and related data. Its paid matrix lists data forwarding and different Data Export API levels, but the public matrix does not define the numeric low- and high-volume thresholds. On-premises deployment is positioned as an Enterprise capability.
Neither source set establishes a lossless, one-click migration of historical events, grouping decisions, dashboards, alert rules, release stability, and integrations. A move would at minimum require replacing SDK initialization and credentials, changing source-map or symbol upload steps, recreating workflows, and validating sensitive-data filters.
Pricing as of August 14, 2026
Sentry’s Developer plan is $0 for one user and lists 5,000 errors, 5 GB each of logs and application metrics, 5 million spans, 50 replays, and one each of uptime and cron monitors. Team is displayed at $26 per month with unlimited users. The calculator shows $312 per year, so the displayed monthly figure is the annual-billing equivalent on the checked page. Team includes 50,000 errors, multiple other telemetry allowances, and optional pay-as-you-go usage.
BugSnag Free is $0 for one user and lists 7,500 events and 1 million spans per month. Select adds unlimited users, end-to-end diagnostics, and basic notifications. Preferred adds more prioritization, segmentation, notification, and SSO capabilities.
BugSnag’s static page presents Select and Preferred as “starting at $0/month” before event and span volume is selected. It does not expose the configured paid total or a numeric schedule for every tier in a reproducible static view. We therefore cannot provide a defensible like-for-like paid total without checking the live calculator for a specific workload or obtaining a written quote.
Decision guide for a small team
Trial Sentry first if your product is primarily web, backend, or full-stack SaaS; two or more engineers need access; and you may consolidate errors, traces, logs, metrics, and replay. Sentry is also the clearer candidate when a documented German SaaS region, a published multi-user starting price, or an accessible self-hosted option is important.
Trial BugSnag first or alongside Sentry if mobile, native, game, or multi-platform stability is central; release adoption and stability scores are more important than a broad telemetry bundle; and a US-hosted region is acceptable. Confirm the paid price at your expected event and span volume before ranking it on cost.
For a meaningful evaluation, instrument the same small application in both services for 7–14 days under an agreed event budget. Measure setup time, correctly symbolicated errors, duplicate grouping, release attribution, alert latency and noise, SDK overhead, export completeness, and projected cost at observed volume.
Limitations
- We did not install, benchmark, or trial either product. Dashboard speed, grouping accuracy, alert quality, SDK overhead, and developer usability are unknown.
- BugSnag’s paid total was not reproducible from the static official page. It requires a workload-specific calculator or quote check.
- Sentry’s displayed Team price reflects an annual total expressed as a monthly equivalent; confirm the month-to-month figure at checkout.
- We did not verify exact overage behavior for a particular customer configuration or contract.
- API availability does not prove a complete historical migration path. Export rate limits and destination compatibility require testing.
- Compliance coverage must be confirmed for the chosen service, plan, region, and contract. Public badges alone are insufficient.
The recommendation is therefore a shortlist decision, not a final purchase recommendation.
